iOS vs Android: Which Should Your Business Build First?
Not a market-share question — a question about your specific users and business model.
Why "Which Has More Users" Is the Wrong Question
Global market share tells you almost nothing useful — Android has more users worldwide, but that's irrelevant if your actual customers, in your actual market, skew heavily iOS (or vice versa). The right starting point is your own user base or target market, not a global statistic.
Factors That Actually Matter
- Where your users already are — check existing customer data, analytics, or comparable products if you have them.
- Monetisation model — iOS users have historically shown higher average in-app spend in many categories; relevant if the app is paid or has in-app purchases.
- Geography — iOS and Android split differently by country and demographic; know your actual target market, not a global average.
- B2B vs consumer — B2B and enterprise users skew more toward whatever device policy their employer uses, which varies by industry and region.
- Budget for one platform vs two — if budget only supports one platform initially, this becomes the deciding factor regardless of the other considerations.
A Reasonable Default
If you genuinely have no data pointing either way and need to pick a starting platform, iOS is often chosen first for consumer apps with a paid or in-app-purchase model, and Android for apps targeting a broader or price-sensitive audience — but this is a generalisation, not a rule, and existing data about your own users should always override it.
